Laboratory Laminar Hoods

Laminar hoods are a type of ventilation equipment that is used in the laboratory to create an aseptic environment and to protect personnel and test materials. These hoods are divided into three classes I, II, III based on the level of protection provided.

Chemical Hoods or Class I Hoods are designed to protect the user from harmful and toxic fumes as well as dust. These hoods are essential for chemistry, microbiology laboratories, pharmaceutical research and development departments, cancer research laboratories and to prevent the spread of bacteria and carcinogens to the environment.
This type of hood has a front part to access the materials inside the chamber, negative pressure that transports air from outside to inside and HEPA filter that purifies the air before leaving the hood.

Class II Hoods or Cell Culture Hoods are designed to create a sterile environment for cell culture experiments. This type of hood includes a chamber in which air is absorbed after circulation by a HEPA filter and thus the samples inside the chamber are protected from any contamination.
In this hood, the inlet air enters the chamber after passing through a HEPA filter and the outlet air passes through a separate filter. This type of hood is used in molecular laboratories where most tests need to be performed under sterile conditions. There are four types of class II hoods, including A, B1, B2 and B3, which can be decided based on the type of tests will performed.

Class III Hoods provide the highest level of protection for the user as well as the test specimens. These hoods can include biosafety cabinets or gloveboxes. Class III hoods are designed to simultaneously protect the user, the environment and the test specimens.
These types of hoods are completely isolated from the outside space and are used to work with human pathogens and other sensitive materials.
